Collections

Our skip company already recycles wood, so why should we use you?

We’ll probably be a bit cheaper, but most importantly your waste wood will be reused wherever possible. Reusing wood is much more efficient and environmentally-friendly than recycling it into woodchip.

Your involvement will also result in life-changing opportunities for disadvantaged people who will gain self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as learn a range of useful transferable skills to help them back to work. People we help include ex-offenders, those with mild mental health or learning difficulties and people who have come through drug and alcohol abuse.

Is it as good value as a skip?

We load our trucks as tightly as possible, so you don’t get the void space of up to 20% that you get with skips. For soil or rubble, a skip is good value, but not for bulky stuff like wood and pallets. With us you get maximum value every time – as well as all of the other environmental and social benefits.

What wood can be collected?

We collect all wood/wood-based products, including wood composites like MDF and chipboard, preservative-treated timber, furniture and other wooden items regardless of type, condition or contamination – except creosoted. Nails, screws, door furniture, fixings, pallet fastenings and other metal contamination poses no problem. Don’t worry if you’re not sure – we will sort it when we collect. Any wood we can’t reuse goes to chipping firms to be turned into sustainable products such as animal bedding.

We can’t do one-off collections comprised of just fire-doors, old kitchen units or similar for our usual rates because they have little or no reuse potential (but they can be recycled). Please discuss any such requirements with your collection manager.

What areas do you collect from?

Our primary collection area is within the Greater Manchester region, but it is possible for us to collect from further afield. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Where do I store my waste for collection?

The ideal way to store your waste wood for collection is to set up a wood bay as near as possible to the general skip(s). The bay only needs to be around 3 square metres and, if possible, confined by Heras fencing. It should be accessible to our collection vehicle – ideally we need to park beside it. There is no need to cover the wood. When there is about a skip load, give us a call and we will collect – our trucks hold either 12 or 37 cubic yards.

Why can’t you leave me a skip?

Our way of collecting might seem a bit unorthodox at first, but it is the most environmentally-friendly way possible – less fuel is used, less pollution is generated and more material can be saved for reuse. And as we can take up to 37 cubic yards in one go, there will be fewer vehicle movements on your site.

When can you collect?

Normal collection hours are between 9am and 5pm, although earlier or later collections can be arranged. Same-day or next-day collections are often possible. Around 90% of our collections are carried out within 48 hours of notification.

Do you take other waste?

We can also take other potentially reusable material such as ducting, insulation and spare fixings – just speak to your collection manager. If we can save it from going into the skip, we will.

Are you properly licensed and insured?

Collections are delivered by our parent organisation EMERGE Manchester. We are Registered Waste Carriers, have Safe Contractor and Contractor Plus accreditation and have Environmental Permit Exemptions and Employers and Public Liability Insurance. We provide proper Waste Transfer Notes and a full audit trail. Our collection staff carry CSCS cards, always wear the right PPE and receive on-going training. We can provide Risk Assessments and Method Statements if required.

Can you help with environmental reporting?

To help you fulfil your environmental obligations, Site Waste Management Plans and inform your staff, customers and shareholders, we provide a monthly analysis of the timber collected from your site. We will send you a Site Reuse and Recycling Summary outlining what has happened to the wood collected, and can also send a Consolidated Summary showing information from multiple sites if desired. Each site also gets a Certificate of Recycling stating the total volume of timber saved each year.

We operate nationally. Can you work with me?

Yes, we can work with you through the National Community Wood Recycling Project’s service for National Buildings Contractors. Get in touch for more details.
